Drug (Amendment) Rules 2022 (January 18, 2022): On January 18, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India) issued the Drugs (Amendment) Rules, 2022, which bring changes to the existing Drugs Rules, 1945.

The amendment introduces a mandatory requirement of QR codes on all active pharmaceutical ingredients. These revised rules will be effective from January 01, 2023.

As per the notification, the amended rule, Rule 96, states that every active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) produced or imported in India must include a QR (quick response) code on the label and at each packaging level. The QR code is expected to contain crucial data that can be scanned by computer software, enabling efficient tracking and tracing of the product.

THE STORED DATA MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
Unique product identification code;
Name of the API;
Brand name (if any);
Name and address of the manufacturer;
Batch no.;
Batch size;
Date of manufacturing;
Date of expiry or retesting;
Serial shipping container code (SSCC);
Manufacturing license no. or import license no.;
Special storage conditions required (if any).
